A new year has just begun, with new hopes, desires and expectations. This is the perfect time to reevaluate our drives not only in work, but also in our day to day life.
In this brief, BMD would like to offer an eye opener on leadership of organisations.
Hortense le Gentil, a leading global executive coach and the author of the widely acclaimed, “Aligned: Connecting Your True Self with the Leader You’re Meant to Be,” says that leaders shouldn’t be heroes any more, in an article written to the HBR.
We generally believe that to be successful, leaders should have some traits such as infallibility, unflappability, being in control and fearlessness. The trait theory of leadership adds a few more characteristics to the list including intelligence, self confidence, determination, integrity and sociability. Other than the above, we have seen several other leadership characteristics presented by various management experts time to time.
However, is this all what it takes to be a great leader?
Le Gentil emphasises the most effective leadership today, at all levels, is not about technical expertise and having all the answers, but about it’s about being human.
What does that entail? Showing vulnerability, connecting with people and being able to unleash their potential- even more so in the pandemic and in the post pandemic world.
Hence today’s business leaders need to be great human leaders. Only human leaders can meet the deep rooted needs and wants of their work forces. Human leaders make employees feel that they are seen, understood and valued.
The present context in which we are living expects us to transform hero leaders into human leaders. Human leaders can make a profound and lasting difference in the lives of people around them, the organisations they lead and the world at large.
BMD is dedicated to bring the necessary knowledge and information required to make the above change.
We wish you a very happy and productive new year!
